Bitsy game editor

Added to the Museum of Data by Harriet Baker on Monday, October 19, 2020. Museum of Data Collection ID: 501.

Public description: Bitsy is a free, online, browser-based editor for making games or stories with a simple, pixel-art style. It was created by Adam le Doux and is hosted on as well as on le Doux’s personal website. It is relatively easy to use for people without knowledge of coding or programming, and it can serve as a good way to learn about the JavaScript programming language, and programming concepts such as variables. The game data is visible and allows users to see 'behind the curtain' of the game-making system. Over time a dispersed community has developed and continues to develop around Bitsy game-making. Makers communicate via platforms such as Twitter and Discord, share support and advice, and develop and deposit ‘hacks’ on GitHub which allow for more intricate game-making. Bitsy is being submitted to the Museum of Data because it is a tool which turns data into playable, engaging artefacts that can be shared online. The community that has grown around Bitsy raises questions about education, property and the links between technical systems, user-friendliness of software development tools and social interaction.
